How to apply

To apply for a place at the GreenSeas Summer School you will need to submit the following information:

1. Personal statement which includes your motivation for applying, how it will benefit your research and career development and what you can bring to the school.

2. For PhD students and Post Docs please explain give a brief explanation (no more than 500 words) of your PhD subject and provide the name and e-mail address of your supervisor

3. CV (max 2 pages), including education history and training.

4. A letter of support from your supervisor or manager(*).

5. Travel grant application if required (see below)



The GreenSeas Summer School is open to PhD students and early career scientists who have research interests in ecosystem modelling. Your research should be within the focus of GreenSeas (see About GreenSeas for more information) or go to the Project Website.


Financial Support

This is a funded summer school, if your application is successful full funding will be provided to cover your time in South Africa including; accommodation and local costs. You will need to pay for your own flights to reach South Africa.

Travel grants are available for otherwise well qualified students, if you wish to apply for a grant please complete the application form accordingly. Applicants from the EU countries should cover some or all of their travels themselves. Applications in excess of  EUR 2500 will have low priority. Shuttle to and from Capetown airport on Jan 27 and Feb 4 will be covered by the Summer School.

Payments based on actual costs will be transferred to the bank account of the applicant during the summer school bringing all tickets and receipts. Actual costs exceeding the grant will as a rule not be transferred.

Review Criteria

Applications will be examined by two or more reviewers with the following criteria in mind:

* Relevance of study and interests in GreenSeas science area

* Level and suitability of qualifications

* Quality of personal statement

(*) Letter of support should be signed by the supervisor/manager and scanned, sent to the applicant who will upload it in the web-form together with the other information. The letter of support should as a minimum contain (i) the identification of the person providing the support (Name, title, institution address...) and the name and affiliation of the applicant, (ii) a statement on the formal relationship between applicant and supporting person (iii) a statement on the aquaintance of the supporting person with the field of education/ research of the applicant (iv) a statement on the aquaintance of the supporting person with the skills/ qualifications of the applicant (v) a statement on the recommendation of the applicant by the supporting person (vi) date and written signature of the supporting person. If a scanned copy cannot be produced, pleas send it as an ordinary letter to project office (press 'Contact' in main menu)
